I’m definitely not saying that this best whole-wheat chocolate chip cookie recipe is the best one out there. There are many other incredible cookie recipes out there that can lay claim that title. But I can confidently tell you that it’s one of the best cookie recipes to me. And hopefully you’ll think the same.
First of all, these cookies are the easiest to make. All you really have to do is combine the ingredients in a large bowl, refrigerate for a little while, and then bake!
And can I let you in on a little secret? These cookies are refined-sugar free. Instead of using sugar, I created these cookies with honey. Honey is a somewhat healthier form of sugar, and it also helps these cookies taste amazing.
When to Use Honey or Sugar in a Cookie Recipe
Honey and sugar are both used to sweeten cookies and other baked goods. In the case of cookies however, which sweetener you use can affect the cookie’s texture.
So if you’d like your cookies to be more on the soft side, use honey instead of sugar. Honey helps cookies retain moisture by acting as a humectant. By definition, a humectant’s sole purpose is to keep things/foods moist (source).
In contrast, sugar gives cookies a more crispy texture. So if you’re going for a crispier texture for your cookies – use sugar instead. But for this best whole-wheat chocolate chip cookie recipe, we’re gonna go with the honey..
Making Chocolate Chip Cookies With Whole-Wheat Flour
I don’t know your take on it, but I just love making chocolate chip cookies with whole-wheat flour. Please don’t misunderstand. I’m a fan of chocolate chip cookies in general.
But to me, the whole-wheat flour just adds such an irresistible wholesomeness. And that nutty flavor can’t be denied. Another win for whole-wheat flour is that it also adds a lot of nutrients to cookies.
Whole-Wheat Flour Nutrients
These nutrients include fiber (biggie), B vitamins, and also iron – among other vital nutrients (source). This is one of the main reasons why you should include whole-wheat flour in your diet more often.
*Note: It works very well for this best whole-wheat chocolate chip cookie recipe, but not every baked good can be made with whole-wheat flour.
It’s a more heavier flour compared to regular all-purpose flour. Therefore it can make baked products more dense. In this case, it’s best to read over a recipe’s notes and suggestions before proceeding to use it.
To resolve this, I usually replace part of the whole-wheat flour with regular flour in some recipes. This helps cookies and cakes, etc. to still have a moderately light texture*

- 1/2 cup whole-wheat flour
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1 1/2 – 2 tbsp dairy-free or regular mini chocolate chips
- 2 tsp light oil such as vegetable oil, organic canola oil, etc.
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 1/2 tbsp honey (or try using maple syrup for a vegan option)
- 2 tbsp and 2 1/2 tsp dairy-free or regular milk
- In large mixing bowl, combine all of the ingredients well. *If you have to – use your hands to make sure all of the ingredients are incorporated* Cover the bowl and refrigerate for 20 minutes.
- Use about 1 1/2 tbsp dough to make around 9 cookies. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Make sure to press slightly down on the top of the dough to flatten before placing in the oven. Bake cookies for 11-12 minutes until lightly browned. Enjoy!
