Oh my gosh, these nutritious and tasty hamburger buns are so amazing! They’re super healthy, but taste just as good as I hoped they would.

I know, another hamburger bun recipe. But these aren’t your ordinary hamburger buns.

These hamburger buns contain incredible health-benefiting ingredients such as ground flaxseed, oats, and extra virgin olive oil.

In other words, they’re not lacking in taste in any way, just because they’re healthy. And your family/friends will be none the wiser..

The Importance of an Egg Wash

First of all, these buns are absolutely gorgeous right out of the oven. With the help of a simple egg wash before baking, the crust comes out to a beautiful golden brown color.

Without the egg wash, they wouldn’t shine or stand out as much. Therefore it’s best that you don’t skip doing it. You’ll be so glad you did:)

I also recommend that you brush the buns with a little melted butter right after baking them. It add shininess, and adds a little moisture and flavor to the buns as well.

They Taste Incredible

I’m all for the gorgeous appearance of these nutritious and delicious hamburger buns. But what good is that if they don’t taste good at the same time, right?

Earlier I stated that these buns taste as good as I had hoped for. Indeed, after putting them in the oven to bake – I had no idea how they would taste.

I had no idea that they would be so fluffy and soft on the inside with the perfect-textured crust. I also wanted them to have a touch of sweetness, so I added in a couple teaspoons of sugar.

A Touch of Sugar Enhances the Taste

Best decision ever! It’s the perfect amount to add give the buns an even more enhanced taste. I’m sure they wouldn’t taste as good without it.

Almost Forgot to Tell You..

Oh wow! How could I go this far without telling you how easy these nutritious and tasty hamburger buns are to make?

Even if you’ve never made your own hamburger buns (or rolls) before, this is such an easy recipe. Don’t worry: I too started out not knowing how a recipe would turn out.

You Can Do It!

As I’ve learned, the more you keep doing something; the more you’re bound to get better at it. And that’s so true! The key is to not give up.

I’ll write down the recipe steps in the simplest way I can. You’ll be fine, and your hamburger buns will come out so good:)

Ground Flaxseed is Absolutely Amazing

I’m sure you already may know all about the health benefits of oats and olive oil. But what about ground flaxseed?

Well, I’m here to enlighten you on that! I don’t think ground flaxseed is given as much attention as the other two. But you’ll be glad to know that these hamburger buns contain some. Here’s why…

Omega 3s

One of the greatest things about ground flaxseed is that it is a great source of omega 3s. Which means, that it benefits your cardiovascular health a great deal.

Omega 3 is also thought to help combat lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, among other health conditions (source).

It’s Undetectable in Foods

In addition to its many health benefits, you can add ground flaxseed to so many different foods. And what’s more, it has no taste; so no one would know you even added it in.

You can add in a tablespoon or two of ground flaxseed to oatmeal, breads, cakes and other foods. All without any ill effects (from personal experience), but yet adding so much nutritional value.

Told you it’s amazing..

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cups warm water (around 110 degrees, or before it gets really hot)
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast (You can also use instant yeast. Instructions below)
  • 1 1/2 tbsp quick cooking (instant) oats
  • 2 1/2 tsp regular cane sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 tbsp ground flaxseed
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil (if push comes to shove – you can substitute another light tasting oil such as organic canola, vegetable, etc.)
  • 2 3/4 cup + 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

Instructions

  • Add the warm water, olive oil, active dry yeast*, oats, and sugar to a large bowl. Let the mixture sit for about 8 minutes. It should turn nice and foamy.
If the mixture doesn’t turn foamy, you may need fresher yeast.
*If you’d like to use instant yeast, don’t add it to the above mixture.
Just add the warm water, olive oil, oats and sugar to the bowl, and let it sit for 5 minutes until the oats soften. Continue on to step 2*
  • Now you can add the flour, salt, and instant yeast (if using) to the foamy water mixture.
Stir with a fork until the mixture comes together. If it’s too difficult for you, just use your fingers instead.
  • Add the dough to a floured surface.
Knead by hand (or machine) for 8-10 minutes until the dough is smooth and only slightly sticky. Form the dough into a ball.
(You may need to add an extra sprinkle of flour if the dough is still a little too wet)
  • Grease the bowl that you took the dough out of.
Place the ball of dough into the bowl and roll it around so that it’s coated in the oil/grease.
This will help it to not stick to the bowl when you’re removing it later on..
  • Cover the bowl loosely with a kitchen towel. Let the dough sit for an hour until it expands and is double in size.
  • Remove the dough from the bowl, and add to a floured surface. Cut into 6 equal pieces, or 8 if you want smaller buns.
Roll each piece into a ball, and then flatten into a circular bun shape. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet or tray.
  • Loosely cover the pan, and let the rolls sit for 35 minutes. This will allow the rolls to expand again.
Combine 1/4 tsp water and an egg together. Brush *very gently* over the tops of the buns, so they won’t deflate.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for around 22-24 minutes or until browned to your liking.
Immediately brush the buns with a little melted butter right after removing them from the oven. This adds more flavor, softness, and a pretty shine to the crust.
Move to finish cooling on a wire rack or other surface before serving.
