Or you can eat it as a main dish by itself. Just don’t forget to top it with some freshly chopped green onions for even more flavor!

What Makes This the Perfect Side Dish?

What you will appreciate most about this dish besides the flavor, is its convenience. This tasty turmeric-flavored brown rice isn’t complicated at all to make.

It’s easy enough for anyone to make. And it can be left to quietly simmer, while leaving you free to prepare the rest of your meal.

Also, what makes this rice so amazing is the transformation from ordinary to colorful and eye-catching.

Turmeric: Adds Natural Color and Other Nutritional Benefits

Adds Natural Color

The beautiful yellow color of this rice is not from any artificial sources or manufactured colors. It comes from a natural source: the spice turmeric.

If you’ve ever looked at the various spices in any grocery store, turmeric is sure to have caught your eye. This is because of turmeric’s unique golden color.

There is also a similar colored spice called curry powder.

*Fun fact – curry powder actually contains turmeric as a main ingredient, hence the similarity in color*

Nutritional Benefits

I wouldn’t have known that turmeric is as nutritionally beneficial as it is without doing a little research on it. There’s definitely more to it than meets the eye.

First of all, turmeric is most often used to alleviate joint pain/arthritis due to its anti-inflammatory properties. And it also aids in the treatment of many other diseases and ailments (source).

Can Any Other Beans Besides Black Be Used?

This tasty turmeric-flavored brown rice calls for canned black beans. But you can substitute other kinds of beans if you wish.

You can try substituting kidney beans, pinto beans, chickpeas, etc. They all should go well with the yellow rice. Or you can even leave the beans out completely. The rice won’t know..

Can I Use White Rice Instead of Brown Rice?

White rice should work well in this recipe also. Just keep in mind that white rice takes less time to cook than brown rice.

Brown rice usually takes around 45 minutes to cook, and white rice takes about twenty minutes less. And white rice also doesn’t need as much water as brown rice.

Whatever white rice you use, make sure to go by the water amount and cooking time for 1 cup of rice.

How to Make This Easy Turmeric Brown Rice and Beans

  1. The first thing to do is boil the water/vegetable broth, extra virgin olive oil, and salt first.
  2. After the water comes to a boil, it’s best to turn down the heat before adding in the rice and other seasonings.
  3. After bringing the water back to boiling, you will then cover the pot and turn down the heat to low. After that, it’s time to let the rice cook. This will take around 45 minutes.
  4. After the rice is done, no water should be left in it. You don’t want mushy rice. If you need to – let the rice cook for an extra minute or so until the water is completely evaporated.
  5. After the rice is done, you can then add the beans on top right after. Make sure the beans are heated beforehand. Then let the rice sit covered for 5 minutes to steam.
  6. The last step is to fluff the rice and beans together. Then you can add a little more salt if desired. (Optional – top with chopped green onions before serving. It adds so much flavor).
