Vegan Hamburger Bun (Recipe)
About These Wholesome and Delicious Hamburger Buns:
This light whole wheat vegan hamburger bun recipe is sure to become one of your favorites! I can’t begin to tell you how easy these buns are to make.
In addition, they’re full of flavor; and have the most soft and fluffy texture.
There’s only one cup of whole wheat flour in them, and the rest is regular all-purpose flour. This allows the buns to have a more light texture as compared to all whole wheat flour buns.
Additionally, the whole wheat flour adds healthy whole grains to the buns; which is all good. If you’d like to use all regular all-purpose flour, that’s fine too.
*Note:* Just make sure to watch how much water you add, as all-purpose flour doesn’t absorb as much liquid as whole wheat flour does. In that case, you may need to add a tad more water, or the dough may be too stiff.
Perfect For Your Favorite Burger..
Despite their delightfully soft texture, these hamburger buns are sturdy enough for any burger. Or whatever else you desire to top them with.
They’re also super delicious topped with a little butter and jam warm from the oven. Seriously, what makes these buns so amazing is the addition of almond milk and extra virgin olive oil.
This combination contributes greatly to their soft texture and flavor. And if you’ve never made homemade buns before, don’t worry. The process is actually very easy.
If You’re Not Vegan, You Can Still Make These Hamburger Buns..
This is a vegan hamburger recipe, yes. But that doesn’t mean you’re to be left out if you don’t normally use non-dairy ingredients. You can still make these buns. Just sub regular dairy milk for the nondairy milk, since that’s the only dairy ingredient needed.
As for me, I love creating recipes that are both vegan and non-vegan friendly. I myself enjoy both kinds. But I truly understand that some people just prefer one over the other. That’s their right.
On the other hand, there are those who love trying out different and unique foods. And they have no specific preferences. Therefore I aspire to create easy healthy recipes to suit both palates.
Making Your Own Hamburger Buns: Easy and Cost Effective..
It would seem to be complicated to make your own hamburger buns. That’s far from the truth. They’re so easy to make that I don’t buy them from the store anymore. Plus, it’s more cost effective to make your own anyway.
Three Simple Steps:
To make this vegan hamburger bun recipe, it really only requires three steps. The rest of the time includes the dough rising times, of which there are two.
1 – This recipe calls for active dry yeast, but you can also use instant yeast too. The first step involves the making of the yeast mixture.
Then afterwards, letting it sit for a few minutes (usually about five) until it turns foamy. Then you can add in the rest of the ingredients.
If you use instant yeast, you can forgo making the yeast mixture. and just add the yeast in with the other ingredients.
2 – The second step involves shaping the dough into bun shapes. This is done after kneading the dough (for 8-10 minutes), and then letting it rest for an hour. You can either knead the dough by hand or use a bread machine.
3 – The third step involves baking the buns. This is done after brushing the buns with an egg wash for a richer and more flavorful crust. Then allowing them to rise again for around thirty minutes.
Vegan Hamburger Bun (Recipe) Ingredients:
It’s good to know beforehand that you have all the ingredients to make this vegan hamburger bun recipe.
It’s also important to check the date on your yeast, so that it’s fresh and will activate properly.
This way, you can proceed with the recipe without having to make an unexpected run to the store. I’ve listed the ingredients below. You only need seven in total. I’m sure you have most of them on hand already:
- Water
- Unsweetened Almond or Other Non-Dairy Milk: The addition of the milk helps the texture of the buns to be softer.
- Sugar (regular)
- 1 Packet Active Dry or Instant Yeast
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil: This is the best oil to use, for its nutritional properties. But you can substitute another oil based on what kind you usually use for baking.
- All-Purpose Flour
- Whole Wheat Flour: Make sure it says whole wheat flour on the package, not just wheat flour. Regular wheat flour is highly processed, and isn’t as healthy as whole wheat flour.
- For a Shiny Rich Crust: You will need vegan or nondairy butter, and dairy free milk.
You Can Sub Regular Flour Instead of the Whole Wheat Flour..
*You can choose to use regular (all purpose) flour in place of the whole wheat flour. But I would recommend you to use the whole wheat flour. It adds more of a wholesome flavor, and also adds more nutrients.
If you use only regular flour, you may need to add a bit more water than what the recipe calls for. This is because regular flour is not as absorbent as regular flour. Just add a little water at a time, though…*

Vegan Hamburger Bun (Recipe)
Ingredients
- 1 cup warm water make sure it’s between 110-115 degrees
- 1/4 cup unsweetened nondairy milk (almond milk, soy milk, etc.)
- 1 1/2 tbsp sugar or pure maple syrup add a couple more tsp if desired
- 2 1/4 tsp or 1 packet active dry yeast (can also use instant yeast)
- 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil or regular organic canola oil, vegetable oil, etc.
- 1 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 cup whole wheat flour or substitute regular flour if necessary
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
Instructions
- In a large bowl; combine the warm water, active dry yeast and sugar (or maple syrup). Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes until the yeast turns foamy. If the mixture doesn’t turn foamy, you most likely need fresher yeast..
- Add in the salt, extra virgin olive oil and flour(s). If using instant yeast, add it in now with the water mixture. You don’t have to let it sit for the 5 minutes.Combine the ingredients with a fork until the dough starts to come together.
- Place the dough on a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until the dough is smooth and only slightly sticky.Or you should be able to use a bread machine to combine the dough ingredients. After the dough is kneaded, form it into a ball shape.Notes: If the dough is still a little stiff, you may need to add in a bit more water. On the other hand, if the dough is too wet, add a little more flour. If you use only all-purpose flour, you may need to add a little more water, if the dough is still a bit stiff.
- Oil or grease the bowl that you took the dough out of. Return the ball of dough back to the bowl. Roll it around until it’s coated in the oil or grease.Cover the bowl loosely with a kitchen towel, and let the dough rest for an hour until double in size.
- After the hour is up, deflate the dough. Place it on a floured surface and divide into seven pieces.Roll each piece into a ball, then place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.Press down on each ball until it’s flatter. Cover the dough loosely with a kitchen towel, and let it sit for 35 minutes.
- After the second rise, brush the tops of the buns lightly with nondairy milk. This will add moisture and a nice golden brown color to the crust.Bake the buns at 375 degrees for 5 minutes. After the five minutes, turn down the heat to 375 degrees. Bake them for 18-20 more minutes until the crust is lightly browned.
- After removing the buns from the oven, you can brush the tops with a little melted nondairy butter. This will add richness and a nice shine to them.
