Backstory

Previous to creating this honey whole-wheat bread recipe, I would just buy a loaf of bread from the grocery store. Easy peasy. But for the most part, I felt unfulfilled doing that.

From an early age, I’ve always loved baking. At the age of 12, my father instructed me on how to make Jiffy corn muffins (in the little box). From then on, baking and cooking became a creative pursuit for me. And it hasn’t lost steam yet!

Inspired

It wasn’t till after starting this food blog that I realized how many other food blogs there are out there! Before creating my own recipes, I’ve made plenty from other food bloggers whose recipes I found online. This in turn inspired me to start creating my own recipes.

Honey Whole-Wheat Sandwich Bread Ingredients

As I’ve mentioned, it’s so easy to make your own bread, so don’t feel deterred from attempting it. You should only need a few simple ingredients at the most such as with this recipe:

  • Lukewarm Water: Make sure it’s more on the warm side – but just before being too hot.
  • Melted Butter: Only two tablespoons are needed for this recipe.
  • Honey: Adds a light sweetness, and in addition; helps the bread to stay moist.
  • Active Dry Yeast
  • Salt
  • Whole Wheat Four
  • All-Purpose Flour: By adding all-purpose, it gives the bread a light texture. Not too dense.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups lukewarm water (make sure it’s not too hot)
  • 1 1/2 tbsp melted butter
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 cups whole-wheat flour
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  • In a large bowl combine the water (lukewarm), honey, melted butter, and the yeast. Let sit until foamy (about five minutes).
  • After the five minutes, add in the flours and salt. On a floured surface, knead for 10-15 minutes until smooth and mostly non-sticky (sprinkle as needed with more flour). Note: I usually knead by hand, but I’m sure you can use a bread machine if you prefer..
  • Allow the dough to sit in the bowl (covered) for around 45 minutes until double in size.
  • Deflate the dough and knead for a minute. Then form it into cylinder shape – and fit into greased 9×5 inch loaf pan.
  • *Preheat your oven to 375 degrees* Cover the dough and let it rise again for about 35 -45 minutes until risen about an inch above the pan.
  • Bake for 28-30 minutes until browned to your liking.
*If you’d like, brush the top of the dough gently with an egg wash (egg white + 1/4 teaspoon water or milk) before baking – or wait until after the bread is finished baking and brush it with some melted butter*
