Chocolate is one of my favorite foods. Therefore, it’s only natural that chocolate or chocolate chip cookies are one of my favorite cookies to eat.

The best part about these chocolate cookie recipes is that they let you get creative. You can include peanut butter for chewy cookies, and also nuts for a delectable nutty flavor.

In addition, you can use natural cocoa powder for healthy double chocolate recipes, or even add in some oats for a more nutritious cookie.

You can customize your chocolate cookies any way you want. I did that with the classic homemade chocolate cookie recipes I share in this article.

Ingredients for Chocolate Chip Cookies

To make classic chocolate chip cookies, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • Flour: All-purpose flour is fine, but you can use spelt flour, whole wheat, oat flour, or try using einkorn for healthier cookies.
  • Eggs: It’s best if the eggs are at room temperature. This helps the ingredients incorporate better while combining them. I also believe it enhances the overall taste and texture of your cookies.
  • Milk: Regular milk or dairy-free milk if you’re vegan.
  • Sugar: Light brown sugar is the primary sweetener for making chocolate cookies. But you can use regular sugar and add some molasses if you do not have brown sugar. Another popular sugar you can substitute for light brown sugar, is coconut sugar.
  • Butter: Helps your cookies to be rich and tender. If you prefer, you can substitute non-dairy butter instead.
  • Baking Soda: To give your cookies a good rise, and it helps to promote a chewy texture. Some recipes also include baking powder, which helps cookies to have a light texture.
  • Salt: A little salt to balance the flavors.
  • Vanilla Extract: It enhances the taste of your chocolate cookies. Well, almost all cookies benefit from the addition of vanilla extract.
  • Chocolate Chips: Semisweet chocolate chips are my go-to chocolate chips for my cookie recipes. But some people prefer milk chocolate chips or dark chocolate chips. It’s all about what your preference is.
  • Unsweetened Applesauce: I learned this secret cookie recipe from another food blogger and love it. I add a little to my cookie recipes sometimes for more chewiness and a softer texture.

Tips for Making the Best Chocolate Chip Cookies

  • Refrigerate the dough: While it’s not mandatory, I like refrigerating it for 20 to 40 minutes (depending on the composition) before scooping it onto the baking sheet. It helps to make the dough easier to work with, and enhances the cookies’ flavor and texture. Total win/win.
  • Use unsweetened applesauce: I’ve used it in many recipes since discovering its goodness. It adds moisture to my cookies, without my having to add too much unhealthy butter. And you really can’t taste it in the cookies. Just make sure to not go overboard in adding it though; or the texture of your cookies won’t be as you want them. The texture will be too gummy.
  • Line the baking sheet with parchment and spray lightly with oil before baking: Cookies often stick to the baking sheet if not lined. Always line the baking sheet with parchment, and with some cookie recipes; spray with oil to keep your cookies from sticking to the pan.

Chocolate chips are one of the most popular add-ins for chocolate cookies, but you can switch up the flavor of your cookies by adding any of these to your dough.

  • Nuts: Sliced almonds, peanuts, and hazelnuts are good chocolate cookie add-ins. Besides giving your cookies a pleasant nutty flavor, they also improve their healthiness.
  • Peanut butter: Peanut butter in chocolate elevates your cookies to a class of their own. The taste is just incredible.
  • Oats: Even when using all-purpose flour, adding oats to your cookie dough makes it healthier. Plus, it gives it a wholesome, whole-grain chewiness.

Storing Your Cookies

Cookies do not have to be refrigerated. Just put them in an airtight container or zip-lock plastic bag and keep them at room temperature.

Hint: drop a piece of sandwich bread into the cookie jar (if using) to absorb excess moisture, and to keep your cookies soft.

Your cookies can be stored for up to 7 days this way. For the freshest taste, I wouldn’t really go past a couple of days. You could also:

  • Refrigerate them: Put your cookies in an airtight container and store them in your refrigerator. Warm them in an oven to restore crispness when you are ready to serve them.
  • Freeze them: Instead of freezing baked cookies, it’s best to freeze the dough and bake frozen dough when you want to use it. Drop dough balls on a lined baking sheet and freeze overnight. Then, transfer them to a Ziploc bag and freeze them. You can store frozen cookie dough for up to three months.
