Tips for Making Excellent Bread
Breads are one of my favorite baked goods because they’re fairly easy to make and highly customizable. The following tips will help you make better bread.
- Do not keep yeast too long: Store dry yeast for only a few months. Old yeast does not work well. And always be sure to check the expiration dates before using it in a recipe.
- Measure carefully: When following a recipe, keep to the recommended measurements. Deviations will affect the texture and taste of your bread.
- Always preheat your oven: This is one of the golden rules of baking. Always preheat your oven before baking, if possible. This helps with time management; you don’t have to delay baking your recipes.
- Always grease or spray loaf pan: The second golden rule of baking is “always grease (or oil) your baking pan.” It keeps your batter from sticking to the pan and helps give your loaf a nice brown crust.
- Practice: Practice makes you better. Try again, even if you don’t get the recipe the first time. The more you bake, the better you become.
Storing Your Bread
To store baked bread, allow it to cool down thoroughly, then store it in an airtight sealed container or a Ziploc bag.
I recommend keeping bread at room temperature because refrigerating it can cause it to dry out and change its texture.
